Understanding the V-Packing Set: A Multi-Component Design

A V-packing set is a multi-part sealing assembly consisting of three distinct components: a pressure ring (also called a header or adapter ring), one or several V-shaped sealing rings, and a support ring (also known as a female adapter or base ring). The V-rings, also referred to as Chevron packings, are the primary sealing elements and can be used to safely and reliably seal piston rods, plungers, and pistons, ensuring leak-free operation.

The number of V-rings in a set is not fixed—it varies depending on the pressure to be sealed and the specific application requirements. For higher pressure applications, additional V-rings are stacked together to provide increased sealing capability. This modular design allows the V-packing set to be customized for different operating conditions, making it one of the most adaptable sealing solutions available.

How V-Packing Sets Work: The Self-Energizing Sealing Mechanism

The working principle of a V-packing set is based on a pressure-energized sealing mechanism that provides automatic compensation for pressure fluctuations and seal wear.

When the set is installed in a gland or housing, the pressure ring transmits the axial load to the V-rings. As system pressure increases, the unique V-shaped profile of the sealing rings causes the lips to deform and expand radially outward against the rod/cylinder wall and inward against the housing. This compression forces the lips to exert increasing radial pressure on the sealing surfaces, creating a progressive sealing effect—the higher the pressure, the tighter the seal.

The V-shaped base on the header and intermediate rings allows the packing to respond automatically to changes in system pressure, providing a wedging action under gland compression that enables the system to remain in service even with worn bushes or rams. Although some media may pass through the first V-ring, the pressure is significantly reduced during this process, and subsequent V-rings provide additional sealing barriers.

The support ring provides axial backup, ensures the set remains properly aligned, and prevents the V-rings from extruding under high pressure. The combination of these components creates a robust, adaptable seal that performs exceptionally well under fluctuating pressures and on surfaces that are not perfectly smooth.

Material Selection: PEEK and PTFE for Demanding Applications

The performance of a V-packing set is largely determined by the materials used in its construction. For demanding heavy-duty applications, PEEK and PTFE have emerged as the materials of choice.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) provides excellent chemical stability and a low friction coefficient, which is critical for preventing seal "chatter" and ensuring smooth operation. PTFE's chemical inertness makes it resistant to virtually all industrial fluids, while its low friction properties reduce wear on both the seal and the mating surfaces.

PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) offers chemical resistance similar to PTFE but with superior mechanical characteristics. PEEK provides excellent thermal stability for high-temperature applications and is often used for the female adapter or pressure ring to prevent material extrusion under extreme high pressure. PEEK's high mechanical strength, wear resistance, and dimensional stability make it ideal for the most demanding sealing applications.

The combination of PTFE and PEEK in a V-packing set provides a synergistic effect: PTFE delivers chemical resistance and low friction, while PEEK provides mechanical strength and extrusion resistance. This material combination enables the V-packing set to withstand working pressures up to 700 bar, with customized PEEK/PTFE combinations supporting ultra-high pressure conditions up to 1,400 bar.

Key Advantages of V-Packing Sets

V-packing sets offer several distinct advantages that make them the preferred choice for heavy-duty hydraulic applications:

1. Self-Energizing Sealing Action: The V-shaped profile automatically responds to system pressure changes, providing a tighter seal as pressure increases.

2. Modular Design: The number of V-rings can be adjusted to suit different pressure requirements, providing flexibility for various applications.

3. Exceptional Pressure Capability: V-packing sets can withstand extreme pressures, with customized PEEK/PTFE combinations supporting pressures up to 1,400 bar.

4. Tolerance to Surface Imperfections: Unlike many other seal types, V-packing sets can provide reliable sealing even on worn or damaged counter surfaces.

5. Chemical and Temperature Resistance: PEEK and PTFE materials provide excellent resistance to chemicals and high temperatures.

6. Low Friction and Long Service Life: The combination of low-friction materials and a robust design provides extended service life and reduced maintenance requirements.

Typical Applications

V-packing sets are widely used across a diverse range of heavy-duty industries and applications:

  • Hydraulic Presses: Main and drawback rams in forging, stamping, and extrusion presses

  • Construction Equipment: Excavators, loaders, and bulldozer hydraulic cylinders

  • Industrial Machinery: Injection molding machines, compression molding equipment

  • Marine Hydraulics: Shipboard hydraulic systems and steering gear

  • Steel and Iron Industry: Heavy rolling mill hydraulics and scrap metal shearing

  • Oil and Gas: Reciprocating pumps and pipeline valve glands

  • Heavy-duty Rod and Piston Sealing: Piston rods and plungers in harsh operating conditions

Conclusion

V-packing sets represent a time-tested and versatile sealing solution for the most demanding hydraulic applications. Their unique multi-component design, self-energizing sealing mechanism, and compatibility with advanced materials like PEEK and PTFE make them essential components for ensuring reliable, long-lasting sealing performance in heavy-duty industrial environments.

Whether in high-pressure hydraulic cylinders, injection molding machines, or marine applications, V-packing sets offer the durability, adaptability, and performance required to keep critical equipment operating safely and efficiently.
