O-Ring Cord: The Flexible Custom Sealing Solution

Table of Contents

O-ring cord, also called round cord stock, is a continuously extruded elastomer with a solid circular cross-section, supplied in rolls rather than pre-formed closed loops like standard molded O-rings. It is one of the most practical sealing materials for non-standard, large-diameter or emergency sealing jobs across global industries. Users can cut the cord to the exact circumference needed and splice the two ends together by cold bonding or hot vulcanization to build a custom O-ring on-site, with no custom mold or tooling cost required.

A wide range of elastomer grades are available to match different fluids, temperatures and working conditions. NBR (Nitrile) is the most common, offering good oil and fuel resistance for hydraulic and automotive systems. EPDM stands out against ozone, UV, hot water and steam, widely used in HVAC, water valves and outdoor equipment. FKM (Viton) delivers excellent chemical resistance for harsh oils, solvents and high-temperature environments. Silicone tolerates extreme high and low temperatures and can be formulated to meet FDA requirements for food and pharmaceutical contact. Other specialty options include HNBR, PU and FFKM for demanding aggressive media applications.

Compared with molded O-rings, o-ring cord has clear strengths and limitations. Its biggest advantage is unlimited size flexibility. For oversized glands, one-off prototypes, breakdown maintenance or special equipment where standard AS568 sizes do not fit, cord stock avoids long lead times and expensive mold charges. Maintenance teams keep cord rolls in stock for fast field repair to reduce machine downtime. However, spliced joints are the weak point: vulcanized joints perform far better than adhesive-bonded ones, and molded seamless O-rings are still preferred for high-pressure, high-cycle dynamic sealing that demands tight dimensional tolerance and consistent reliability.

Typical applications cover static and light-duty static sealing: hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, pump flanges, pipe joints, tank lids, automotive workshops, food processing machinery, compressors and marine equipment. It can also serve as simple linear gaskets instead of being made into O-rings.

When selecting o-ring cord, engineers need to confirm cross-section diameter, hardness (Shore A), compatible medium, working temperature and pressure, plus whether the joint will be cold-glued or hot-vulcanized. Proper surface cleaning and precise cutting at 45 degrees are critical to achieve a neat, leak-free splice.

In short, o-ring cord complements molded O-rings perfectly. Standard molded seals handle mass production and precision sealing; o-ring cord solves the tricky custom-size and urgent-repair sealing challenges. For seal distributors, maintenance departments and equipment manufacturers, well-selected cord stock is a cost-effective, ready-to-use sealing backup that keeps systems sealed even when no off-the-shelf O-ring fits.
