Introduction: The Workhorse of the Sealing Industry
In the world of industrial sealing, few materials are as widely recognized and relied upon as Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR). Commonly known as Buna-N, NBR O-Rings are the "workhorses" of fluid sealing systems. From automotive engines to hydraulic cylinders and everyday plumbing, NBR O-Rings provide a reliable, cost-effective, and robust sealing solution. But what makes NBR so universally popular, and how do you choose the right specification for your application?
Understanding Nitrile (NBR) Material
NBR is a synthetic rubber copolymer made from acrylonitrile and butadiene. The unique properties of NBR come from the ratio of these two monomers. A higher acrylonitrile content generally results in better resistance to oils and fuels, while a higher butadiene content provides better flexibility at low temperatures.
The primary advantage of NBR is its exceptional resistance to petroleum-based fluids, such as mineral oils, greases, and hydraulic fluids. This makes it the default choice for dynamic and static seals in machinery that relies on oil-based lubrication.
Choosing the Right Hardness: NBR 70 vs. NBR 90
At Forever Seals, we manufacture NBR O-Rings in two primary hardness levels: 70 Shore A and 90 Shore A. Understanding the difference is critical for optimal performance:
NBR 70 Shore A (Standard Grade): This is the most common specification. It offers an excellent balance of flexibility, compression set resistance, and sealing force. NBR 70 is ideal for general-purpose sealing, low to medium pressure applications, and situations where slight hardware misalignment may occur.
NBR 90 Shore A (High Hardness Grade): When system pressures increase, standard 70 Shore A seals can experience "extrusion"—where the rubber is forced into the clearance gap between metal parts. NBR 90 is much harder and highly resistant to extrusion, making it suitable for high-pressure hydraulic systems and dynamic applications.
Temperature and Chemical Compatibility
NBR O-Rings operate effectively in a temperature range of -30°C to +120°C (-22°F to +248°F).
While they are excellent with oils and greases, they are generally not recommended for exposure to strong acids, ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons (such as benzene). For applications requiring extreme chemical resistance or temperatures above 150°C, alternative materials like FKM (Viton) or FFKM should be considered.
Typical Applications of NBR O-Rings
Because of their excellent oil resistance and cost-effectiveness, NBR O-Rings are used across a vast array of industries:
Automotive: Engine seals, fuel system components, and power steering systems.
Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: Piston and rod seals in cylinders and pumps.
Industrial Machinery: Gearboxes, compressors, and bearing seals.
Oil & Gas: Valves, flanges, and wellhead equipment (for non-extreme conditions).
Water Systems: General plumbing and water pump seals (where temperatures are moderate).
