PTFE vs. PEEK vs. UHMWPE: Choosing the Right Material for Extreme Sealing

Table of Contents

Introduction: Beyond Rubber
In the previous article, we discussed the difference between standard O-rings and spring-energized seals. While the spring mechanism provides continuous force, the true "superpower" of a high-performance seal lies in its outer jacket material.

When an application involves extreme temperatures (cryogenic or high heat), highly aggressive chemicals, or high-speed dry-running conditions, standard elastomers like NBR or FKM will degrade and fail. This is where high-performance polymers—specifically PTFE, PEEK, and UHMWPE—take the stage.

Here is a comprehensive comparison to help you choose the right material for your demanding applications.

1. PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene / Teflon™)
PTFE is the most widely used material for spring-energized seal jackets.

  • Temperature Range: -200°C to +260°C.

  • Chemical Resistance: Virtually universal. PTFE is inert to almost all industrial chemicals, solvents, and acids.

  • Friction: Extremely low (one of the lowest of any solid material).

  • Advantages: Excellent for high-speed dynamic applications, food-grade, and highly corrosive environments.

  • Limitations: Pure PTFE is soft and has a high thermal expansion rate and poor wear resistance. To solve this, we use filled PTFE (adding carbon, graphite, or bronze) to improve compressive strength and wear resistance.

2. PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone)
PEEK is a high-performance semi-crystalline thermoplastic that offers superior mechanical strength compared to PTFE.

  • Temperature Range: -100°C to +250°C.

  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent, though not as universally inert as PTFE (it can be attacked by some concentrated acids).

  • Friction: Good, but slightly higher than PTFE.

  • Advantages: Outstanding mechanical strength, high stiffness, and excellent wear resistance. It is highly resistant to extrusion, making it ideal for ultra-high-pressure applications.

  • Limitations: Higher cost and more difficult to machine than PTFE.

3. UHMWPE (Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene)
UHMWPE is known for its incredible impact strength and abrasion resistance.

  • Temperature Range: -200°C to +80°C.

  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent against most chemicals, but not suitable for strong oxidizing acids.

  • Friction: Very low, and it has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.

  • Advantages: Extremely tough and durable. It can withstand high impact and is often used in heavy-duty hydraulic applications where dirt and contamination are present.

  • Limitations: Lower temperature limit. It cannot be used in high-heat applications.

Which Material Should You Choose?

  • Choose PTFE for extreme chemical resistance, high temperatures (up to 260°C), and high-speed rotating equipment.

  • Choose PEEK for ultra-high-pressure applications where extrusion is a risk, and high mechanical strength is required.

  • Choose UHMWPE for heavy-duty, abrasion-resistant applications (like construction machinery) with moderate temperatures.

Semi-Finished Materials for Your Machining Needs
At Forever Seals, we understand that not every customer needs finished seals. Many engineers prefer to machine their own components.

We supply premium semi-finished materials, including PTFE, PEEK, and UHMWPE in the form of rods, tubes, sheets, and custom blanks. These materials are ready for your in-house CNC machining, ensuring you get the exact profile and dimensions you need without the long lead times of custom molding.
