CNC Machined Seals: Precision Custom Sealing Without Mold Tooling

CNC machined seals, or CNC turned seals, are custom sealing rings produced by CNC lathes directly from solid rod or tube stock, instead of compression or injection molding. This flexible manufacturing method serves non-standard, complex-profile, high-performance sealing parts, and is widely used for prototypes, small batches and urgent replacements in hydraulic, chemical, vacuum and heavy machinery industries.

Unlike molded seals needing costly custom molds and long lead times, CNC machining removes mold expenses. MOQ can be as low as 1 piece, accelerating sample testing and aftermarket repairs. CNC turning achieves tight tolerances, typically ±0.05 mm, with precision versions down to ±0.01~0.02 mm. No parting lines or flash burrs on sealing surfaces, ensuring stable sealing under high pressure and reciprocating motion.

A broad selection of materials is available for different media and temperature ranges:

• PTFE / filled PTFE: great chemical resistance, low friction, for corrosive fluids and vacuum
• PU / HPU polyurethane: excellent wear and anti-extrusion performance, ideal for hydraulic cylinder seals
• FKM / Viton: oil resistant, withstands temperatures above 200°C
• NBR: economical for regular hydraulic oil
• EPDM: compatible with water, steam and glycol
• Silicone VMQ: wide temperature tolerance, food-grade available
• FFKM, PEEK: premium grades for extreme heat and harsh chemicals

Common profiles include O-rings, X-rings, U-cups, step seals, Glyd rings, backup rings, guide strips and dust seals. They cover piston, rod and static seals, as well as large-diameter rings hard to mold.

CNC seals fit applications where standard seals cannot work: obsolete equipment spares, non-standard grooves, special chemical requirements, large sizes and new product trials. They are widely used in hydraulic cylinders, construction machinery, injection machines, valves, pumps, aerospace, food and vacuum systems.

One key limitation: soft elastomers are difficult to machine cleanly and prone to fuzzing. CNC turning works best for rigid or semi-rigid polymers like PTFE, PU and PEEK. Molded vulcanized seals are still more cost-effective for mass standard soft rubber O-rings.
