NBR vs FKM Oil Seals: Material Differences & Application Scenarios

Oil seals are indispensable core components in mechanical equipment, responsible for preventing lubricant leakage and blocking external dust, moisture, and corrosive media. The service life and operational stability of oil seals depend heavily on their raw materials. NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) and FKM (Fluorocarbon Rubber) are the two most widely used elastomer materials for oil seals in industrial manufacturing. Despite sharing mainstream application status, their inherent material properties lead to huge differences in temperature resistance, chemical stability, mechanical performance, and application scenarios. This article systematically compares the material characteristics, performance advantages and limitations of NBR and FKM oil seals, and sorts out their applicable working conditions to provide reliable guidance for industrial material selection.

1. Basic Material Overview

1.1 NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber)

NBR is a synthetic copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene, one of the earliest developed and most cost-effective general-purpose rubber materials for oil seals. Its performance can be adjusted by modifying the acrylonitrile content: higher acrylonitrile content enhances oil resistance and mechanical strength, while lower content improves low-temperature flexibility. With mature production technology and stable basic performance, NBR has become the most common universal material for ordinary industrial oil seals, occupying more than 70% of the general sealing market .

1.2 FKM (Fluorocarbon Rubber)

FKM is a high-performance special synthetic rubber containing fluorine atoms in its molecular structure. The strong carbon-fluorine chemical bond endows it with excellent comprehensive stability that ordinary rubber cannot match. As a high-end sealing material, FKM is designed for extreme working conditions such as high temperature, strong corrosion, and special fuel environments. Its production cost and market price are much higher than NBR, so it is mostly used in high-end equipment and harsh industrial scenarios rather than general conventional machinery .

2. Core Material and Performance Differences

2.1 Temperature Resistance

Temperature adaptability is the most intuitive difference between NBR and FKM oil seals, and also a key basis for material selection. NBR oil seals have a typical continuous operating temperature range of-40°C to 100°C, and special modified formulations can withstand a short-term high temperature of 120°C. However, long-term operation above 100°C will cause NBR to age rapidly, harden, crack, and lose sealing elasticity. In terms of low-temperature performance, NBR has excellent flexibility and can maintain stable sealing performance in low-temperature environments above -40°C .
In contrast, FKM oil seals have outstanding high-temperature resistance, with a continuous operating temperature range of -20°C to 200°C. Some premium FKM formulations can even work stably at 250°C for a long time and resist instantaneous high temperatures up to 300°C. Its high-temperature aging resistance is far superior to NBR. The only drawback is its slightly poor low-temperature performance compared with NBR, as it is prone to slight hardening at temperatures below -20°C, but it still meets the low-temperature use requirements of most industrial extreme conditions .

2.2 Oil and Chemical Resistance

NBR has excellent resistance to petroleum-based mineral oils, common lubricating greases, and hydraulic oils, with low swelling rate and stable sealing performance in conventional oil medium environments. It is the most cost-effective material for ordinary oil sealing working conditions. However, NBR has obvious defects in chemical resistance: it is vulnerable to erosion and swelling damage when exposed to synthetic oils, ester liquids, ketones, brake fluids, and strong acid and alkali media. In addition, it has poor resistance to ozone, ultraviolet rays and atmospheric aging, and is prone to aging failure in long-term outdoor exposure environments .
FKM boasts superior comprehensive chemical and oil resistance. It not only resists all mineral oils applicable to NBR, but also maintains stable performance in synthetic oils, high-temperature fuel oils, gasoline, diesel, and various corrosive chemical solvents. It can effectively resist the erosion of strong acids, weak alkalis and oxidizing media, and has excellent ozone and weather aging resistance. Its chemical stability is far beyond the reach of NBR, making it suitable for complex and corrosive fluid environments .

2.3 Mechanical Properties and Durability

NBR has good mechanical flexibility, excellent abrasion resistance and tear resistance, and low hardness, which can achieve good fitting and sealing effects on mechanical rotating shafts and moving parts. Its elastic recovery is fast under conventional load, and it is not easy to deform under repeated mechanical friction. The main mechanical limitation is that its hardness and structural stability will decrease significantly under high-temperature conditions, leading to seal failure .
FKM has higher hardness, tensile strength and structural rigidity. It has extremely stable mechanical performance under high temperature and high load conditions, with minimal deformation and excellent compression resistance. Its wear resistance is slightly lower than NBR under normal temperature and conventional friction conditions, but it can maintain long-term stable wear resistance in high-temperature and corrosive environments, while NBR is prone to rapid wear and aging failure. Overall, FKM has far longer service life than NBR in harsh working conditions .

2.4 Cost and Economy

Restricted by simple production process and abundant raw materials, NBR oil seals have low production cost and extremely high cost performance, which is suitable for large-scale batch use in general industrial equipment. FKM requires complex synthesis processes and high-cost fluorine-containing raw materials, resulting in a market price 5 to 10 times higher than NBR. Therefore, FKM is not economical for conventional working conditions and is only used in scenarios with strict performance requirements .

3. Typical Application Scenarios

3.1 Application Scenarios of NBR Oil Seals

Based on its cost advantage and stable performance in conventional environments, NBR oil seals are widely used in normal temperature, conventional oil medium, and non-corrosive general industrial scenarios:
  • General mechanical equipment: Ordinary motors, reducers, bearings, gear pumps, and small hydraulic equipment working at room temperature, adapting to conventional lubricating oil and hydraulic oil sealing;
  • Civil automobile basic parts: Ordinary engine oil seals, chassis hydraulic system seals, and low-temperature fuel pipeline seals of ordinary civilian vehicles;
  • Light industrial and agricultural machinery: Agricultural machinery, textile machinery, and daily industrial transmission equipment with low load and normal temperature working conditions;
  • Low-temperature conventional sealing: Mechanical equipment that needs to maintain flexibility in low-temperature environments above -40°C without high-temperature and corrosion requirements.

3.2 Application Scenarios of FKM Oil Seals

Relying on its high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and aging resistance, FKM oil seals are mainly used in high temperature, strong corrosion, special fuel and high-reliability extreme working scenarios:
  • High-temperature industrial equipment: High-temperature furnaces, steam equipment, high-power industrial engines, and hydraulic systems working continuously above 120°C;
  • Automotive high-end and power systems: Automobile engine turbochargers, exhaust systems, high-temperature fuel injection systems, and new energy vehicle thermal management systems;
  • Chemical and petrochemical industry: Equipment seals in contact with synthetic oil, chemical solvents, acid-base corrosive media, and petroleum fuel transportation equipment;
  • Aerospace and high-precision equipment: High-reliability sealing parts for aerospace, military equipment, and high-precision industrial instruments that require long service life and extreme environmental resistance;
  • Outdoor and long-term working equipment: Engineering machinery and outdoor mechanical equipment that are exposed to ultraviolet rays, ozone and harsh weather for a long time.

4. Material Selection Principles

To select oil seal materials reasonably, working temperature, medium type, load conditions and economic cost should be comprehensively considered. For conventional working conditions with temperature below 100°C, ordinary mineral oil medium and no corrosive environment, NBR oil seals are the preferred choice due to their high cost performance and qualified performance. For working conditions involving high temperature above 120°C, synthetic oil, chemical corrosion, long-term outdoor aging or high-reliability requirements, FKM oil seals must be selected to avoid frequent seal failure and equipment failure risks .
It is worth noting that in some special low-temperature and slightly corrosive environments, modified NBR or low-temperature resistant FKM can be selected according to actual working conditions to balance performance and cost, avoiding excessive material waste or insufficient performance.

5. Conclusion

NBR and FKM oil seals have their own unique advantages and applicable boundaries. NBR is a cost-effective universal sealing material with excellent low-temperature flexibility and wear resistance, fully meeting the sealing needs of most conventional industrial normal-temperature working conditions. FKM is a high-performance special sealing material, breaking through the temperature resistance and chemical resistance limitations of NBR, and is the core choice for extreme working conditions such as high temperature and strong corrosion. In actual industrial production, accurate material selection based on working condition characteristics can not only ensure the stable operation of equipment, but also effectively control production and maintenance costs, which is of great significance for improving equipment efficiency and extending mechanical service life.
