1. Design and Components
Our floating seals adopt a compact and robust structural design, consisting of two key components that work together to achieve optimal sealing effect, with strict compliance with industrial precision standards:
- Metal Floating Seal Rings (2 pcs): Made of high-chromium molybdenum alloy cast iron (HRC 60–72) with precision lapped sealing faces (Ra 0.02–0.1μm). The cross-section is saddle-shaped or double-tapered, with a narrow sealing band (0.2–0.3mm) to ensure tight fitting and wear resistance. The two rings are used in pairs, one rotating with the shaft (moving ring) and the other remaining stationary (static ring).
- Rubber O-Rings (2 pcs): Available in NBR, FKM, HNBR or silicone materials, with a thick circular cross-section. Installed in the tapered groove on the back of the floating seal ring, they provide axial preload, floating compensation, and secondary static sealing between the metal ring and the housing. The O-rings can absorb elastic energy to realize automatic axial compensation as the sealing face wears.
The floating design allows small axial and radial displacements (±0.2–0.5mm) of the metal rings, effectively compensating for shaft runout, misalignment and vibration during operation, while the internal tapered gap facilitates lubricating oil to enter the sealing face and form a thin oil film for lubrication and cooling.

2. Applications
Floating seals are widely used in heavy machinery and industrial equipment that operate in harsh environments (sand, dust, mud, water), especially in scenarios requiring effective sealing to prevent lubricant leakage and contaminant intrusion. Key application fields include:
- Construction Machinery: Excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, pavers (applied to travel motors, final drives, track rollers, idlers, tension wheels).
- Mining & Tunnel Equipment: Shield machines, crushers, scraper conveyors, coal mining machine transmission mechanisms and rocker arms, drum devices.
- Agricultural Machinery: Tractors, harvesters, agricultural machinery wheel reducers.
- Marine & Hydraulic Equipment: Dredger bucket wheel output shafts, hydraulic cylinders, marine machinery, centrifugal compressors (suitable for sealing flammable, explosive, toxic and valuable gas media).
- Other Industries: Concrete equipment, sand processing equipment, industrial reducers and other heavy-duty transmission systems.
3. Advantages
- Excellent Sealing Performance: The precision-lapped metal faces and preloaded O-rings form a reliable seal, effectively preventing the leakage of lubricating oil and the intrusion of external contaminants (sand, mud, water), ensuring the normal operation of equipment in harsh environments.
- Strong Wear & Impact Resistance: The high-chromium alloy cast iron rings have high hardness and wear resistance, while the flexible O-rings can absorb impact and vibration, extending the service life of the seals (average service life: 3000–8000 hours, up to 4000 hours or more under standard working conditions).
- Automatic Floating Compensation: The O-rings allow small axial and radial movements of the metal rings, automatically compensating for shaft runout, misalignment and wear of the sealing face, maintaining stable sealing performance for a long time.
- Compact Structure & Easy Installation: The integrated design is small in size and easy to install, suitable for equipment with limited installation space; it can be installed quickly with special tools, reducing installation time and labor costs.
- Wide Operating Range: Adaptable to a wide range of temperatures (-40℃ to +200℃) and low pressure (0–0.2MPa), and can also withstand high pressure up to 30MPa in special models, suitable for various harsh working conditions.
- Cost-Effective: Long service life, low failure rate, reducing the frequency of replacement and maintenance, and lowering the overall operating cost of customers' equipment.
4. Maintenance and Replacement
Maintenance Tips
- Regularly inspect the sealing face for scratches, wear, or contamination; keep the sealing area clean to avoid debris adhering to the sealing face, which may cause leakage or accelerated wear.
- Check the O-rings regularly for aging, deformation, or damage (such as cracks, hardening); replace the O-rings in time if any abnormality is found to ensure the preload effect.
- Ensure that the equipment is properly lubricated; maintain an appropriate amount of lubricating oil to form a stable oil film on the sealing face, avoiding dry friction between the metal rings which may cause overheating and damage.
- Avoid excessive vibration or impact of the equipment, which may cause damage to the floating seal rings or O-rings.
Replacement Guidelines
- Replace the floating seals in pairs (do not replace a single ring), and ensure that the new seals match the model and size of the equipment (outer diameter × inner diameter × thickness).
- Before replacement, clean the installation cavity and shaft thoroughly, remove burrs, scratches, or debris to avoid damaging the new seal during installation; if the shaft neck has serious scratches, repair or replace the shaft first.
- Use special tools to press the seals evenly into the cavity; do not knock or tilt the seals to avoid deformation or damage to the sealing face. The polished sealing faces must face each other, and the tapered sides face outward to hold the O-rings.
- After installation, check the fit of the seals and perform a test run to ensure no leakage or abnormal noise.
5. Challenges
- Harsh Environment Impact: In extremely dusty, muddy, or high-temperature environments, the sealing face is prone to wear, contamination, or O-ring aging. Solution: We use high-performance materials (FKM O-rings for high temperature, wear-resistant alloy cast iron rings) and optimize the sealing structure to enhance resistance to harsh environments.
- Installation Errors: Incorrect installation (such as reversed direction, tilting, or uneven pressing) often leads to seal failure. Solution: We provide detailed installation manuals and video guidance, and assign professional technical personnel to provide online or on-site installation support if needed.
- Material Matching Issues: Different working conditions require different materials (e.g., high-temperature environments need FKM O-rings, while general environments can use NBR O-rings). Solution: Our technical team provides customized material selection suggestions based on customers' specific working conditions (temperature, pressure, medium) to ensure optimal performance.
- Quality of Counterfeit Products: Low-quality counterfeit floating seals have short service life and are prone to leakage, causing equipment damage. Solution: We provide genuine product certification, batch number tracking, and strict quality inspection to ensure that customers receive high-quality, reliable products.
6. Company Selling Points
