In high-pressure hydraulic and fluid sealing systems, O-rings and other primary seals are widely used to block fluid leakage. However, two auxiliary components, backup rings and guide strips, are often overlooked, even though they are essential to prevent premature seal failure and maintain system reliability. Without properly selected backup rings and guide strips, even premium primary seals risk extrusion, eccentric wear and early breakdown, resulting in pressure loss, leakage and costly downtime.
Backup rings, or anti-extrusion rings, are rigid/semi-rigid parts fitted on the low-pressure side of seal grooves. They do not perform sealing themselves. Their main job is to fill the clearance between mating components and form a physical barrier.
At pressures above roughly 100 bar, soft elastomer seals can be squeezed into the small gaps between piston, rod and cylinder bore. This extrusion tears or permanently deforms the seal. Backup rings bear the lateral load, restrict elastomer deformation and raise the pressure limit of the sealing assembly. Spiral-cut or step-cut versions suit dynamic reciprocating applications for easy installation, while solid rings are preferred for static high-pressure service. Dual backup rings are used where pressure acts in both directions. Common materials include PTFE, filled PTFE and PEEK for high rigidity and dimensional stability.
Guide strips (wear strips) sit between moving metal components such as pistons and cylinder bores. They work alongside backup rings to protect the sealing system.
Reciprocating motion creates side loads and misalignment. Without guides, moving parts run off-center, causing uneven compression and accelerated seal wear. Guide strips maintain coaxiality and absorb most sliding friction, preventing metal-to-metal contact. They reduce friction, damp minor vibration and protect cylinder surfaces from scratches. Typical materials are fabric-reinforced phenolic resin and modified PTFE, offering low friction, self-lubrication and chemical resistance against hydraulic fluids.
Material choice depends on operating pressure, temperature and process media. Filled PTFE and PEEK backup rings handle ultra-high pressure up to 300 bar and above. Guide strips prioritize wear resistance and low friction for continuous dynamic movement.
These components are standard in heavy-duty hydraulics, mining equipment, construction machinery, marine and aerospace hydraulic systems. Their combined use extends primary seal life, cuts maintenance frequency and reduces safety risks from seal failure.
